Stoneware Jug
Germany, c. 1735
9-7/8"high

When American Colonial sites are excavated, particularly those associated with taverns, large quantities of shards of stoneware similar to this intact example are found. Though produced in the Westerwald area of Germany, they were made for the English market, and bear the cipher of George II of England. This is a large, ½ gallon sized jug made about 1735 and it measures 9 7/8” tall, and would have held quite a good sized portion of ale, frequently heated with a hot poker that might well have been served for your winter breakfast!
